Of the five commercial real estate sectors analysed across Europe, the hotel sector was found to be the only one to see an increase in terms of final energy consumption (ie: the energy delivered to consumers for end consumption) compared to last year.

Katherine Chapman, director of the Living Wage Foundation, said: “In London, the hospitality sector has the highest proportion of low-paid jobs in London compared to other industries, with 52 per cent of jobs being paid below the real Living Wage.”

WTTC has revealed a report which shows the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) efforts in travel and tourism. The report was unveiled during the global summit in Kigali, Rwanda.

The hotel also has more than 1,300 individual plants and 200-plus local and native plant species throughout the property—and there is a custom-crafted “living” chandelier by nature-inspired artist Patrick Nadeau, suspended from the lobby ceiling: It’s made up of 50,000 strands of air plants.

Whitbread has announced its ambition to get 100 supported interns into paid employment from special needs educational establishments every year. Whitbread, which owns Premier Inn, has been working with specialist colleges for more than a decade and has built mini-Premier Inn hotels on site at Derwen and Hereward colleges in Oswestry and Coventry – identical to ‘real’ hotels – which operate as training facilities for students.

AHLA Foundation, the charitable arm of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), has received funding from Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to help young people join the hospitality workforce. The foundation was established in 1944 to help people living in poverty and experiencing disadvantage worldwide.

The First Group has partnered with global technology firm e& to install EV charging stations at selected properties. The group said that the charging stations would offer “cutting-edge rapid charging technology”, as well as universal compatibility allowing customers to charge a wide range of electric vehicle makes and models.

Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea has opened in Saudi Arabia as the first hotel to achieve LEED Platinum status. The hotel has achieved this partly because it has all of its electricity powered by its own solar farm.

In our FOCUS ON series we look at common questions, acronyms and organisations when it comes to discussing sustainability and hotels. Today we are looking at LEED Certification. What is LEED? LEED is a world-recognised green building rating system, which has been around since 1994. It stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It was founded with the support of the US Green Building Council. It’s a bit like BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), which has been around since 1990, but we will cover that another time...
