It's been a busy time with the Independent Hotel Show at the beginning of the week – the ESG hub was a great place to hear about sustainability concerns across the industry, so we'll be bringing you more from that in the form of articles and Q&As.

This week's Q&A is with Stuart Winstone, CEO SilverDoor Apartments. Stuart offers his thoughts on sustainability in the extended stay sector, data clarity and certifications. Check out the story below.

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance held its annual summit this week and revealed a partnership with Sim Institute, which has created a simulation for hotels and their sustainability practices. The tool shows hoteliers what happens both financially and sustainability-wise in a property over the course of seven years.

Our picture this week is the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, which has just been GSTC-recognised.

The luxury Knightsbridge property joins Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum, and Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi as GSTC-recognised hotels. The London hotel said that the recognition acknowledges “its commitments and dedication towards sustainability”.

The tool has been developed to engage and upskill hospitality leaders and students and will demonstrate how hotels can implement a pathway to net positive hospitality using a simulated experience of managing a hotel for seven years.

Centara Hotels & Resorts has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to have solar energy solutions installed across its properties in Thailand. The Thai hotel operator formalised the MOU with SCG Cleanergy Company Limited, a service provider of solar energy solutions.

Premier Inn has announced the opening of Premier Inn Swindon Town Centre – the first all-electric hotel for the brand on its road to net zero operations by 2040.

Omnevue, an ESG reporting platform, has partnered with The Energy & Environment Alliance (EEA), which will include an ESG webinar for the hospitality industry.

We look at how to navigate the sustainable certification market and what is worth a stamp of approval… There are more than 200 companies worldwide offering sustainable accreditation and certification processes to hotels and hospitality groups. That’s a lot to choose from...
