Our Q&A this week is with Naureen Ahmed, founder of Inspiring Women in Hospitality. Ahmed is on a mission for the hotel sector to be equal for both men and women – and to achieve this she is helping women with a platform for their stories. There has been sobering news too, with last Friday being the first day that the average air temperature was 2 degrees Celsius warmer than pre industrial levels. Let's hope it will bring to the fore how important joint action can be and propel the sector to keep up with best practice, to have sustainability data and emissions tracking in place, to report and benchmark and join the conversation.

HRS, the corporate hotel booking platform, has launched technology for hotels to manage emissions data from business travel and for corporates to invest in removing those emissions.

Accor has partnered with bed manufacturer Hilding Anders International AB to give a second life to beds and mattresses in Spain and Portugal. The firms worked with Astore Procurement – an Accor subsidiary which provides procurement services to the hospitality sector – to recover a total of 8,500 beds and mattresses from 38 renovated ibis, ibis Budget, Mercure and Novotel properties.

Red Sea Global has achieved the highest ever score for Platinum LEED v4.1 Cities: Plan and Design accreditation for The Red Sea destination. The developer scored 96 out of a possible 110 points for the destination’s phase one masterplan, which includes the construction of 16 hotels, as well as marinas, leisure and lifestyle amenities, and the recently opened Red Sea International Airport.

Iberostar Group has announced that Gloria Fluxà Thienemann, vice-chairman and chief sustainability officer, has been recognised on the 2023 TIME100 Climate list. This new annual list by TIME magazine celebrates the contributions of 100 exceptional individuals who are leading climate action within the business community.

IONITY a European EV charging network has announced a new partnership with Valary Hotels, owners of franchises across the UK, including properties by Hilton, Marriott and IHG.

IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced a plan for an ‘eco-friendly’ luxury resort on the island of Borneo. The InterContinental Sabah Kota Kinabalu Resort, located in Kota Kinabalu in northern Borneo, is being developed in partnership with Taipei real estate broker Zhancheng Tourism Development.

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has taken a further step forward in rethinking tourism financing with the launch of the UN NetZero Facility and Re-PLANET Capital Fund Ecosystem.

Recently opened room2 Belfast has announced it will be aiming for the WELL Building Standard’s top spot, which is the Platinum Certification. The WELL Building Standard aims for buildings to be developed with people’s health and wellness at the centre of the design.

Whitbread’s new 195-bedroom Premier Inn hotel in Swindon, which is fully powered by renewable energy, has won an award for its environmental efforts. It was named the winner of the Edie Built Environment Project of the Year award.

South Lodge, part of the Exclusive Collection, has been named Sustainable Hotel of the Year at the Hotel Cateys. The West Sussex hotel was recognised for combining significant green initiatives with sound business sense, “setting an example on sustainability”.

Naureen Ahmed is the founder of Inspiring Women in Hospitality, an organisation set up to create a platform for women in hospitality to share their stories. Ahmed’s mission is to achieve equity in hospitality and for women to feel confident there is a community around them helping them to achieve their goals.
