This week seems to be all about learning. As we all navigate the new language around sustainability – see our feature below – the hotel sector is always adapting and progressing with new best practices and behaviours. To achieve net zero and consider all aspects of the UN's SDGs, we look at both the environmental need as well as the social need to come together in action. Below we cover a story on Green Key offering training to hotel staff on sustainable practices, as well as a DEI course run by inclusivity and safety specialist Maiden Voyage.

We also share the news of Travelodge's first director of sustainability, Demi Turner and SH Hotels & Resorts, the group behind 1 Hotels, in a global expansion.

Green Key has partnered with Ecolab and Lobster Ink, an online training provider, to create sustainability training for hotels teams. The collaboration aims to educate and inspire individuals within the hotel sector to adopt best practice in sustainability in the hope it will drive positive change within the workplace. The content of the sustainability course has been developed by both Green Key and Lobster Ink and includes a series of four modules focusing on practical insights such as the importance of planning and communicating sustainability, and how to prompt waste reduction, energy conservation and responsible consumption.

Staff at INNSiDE Newcastle, part of the Meliá Hotels International group, have completed a training course which teaches the hotel industry about guest inclusivity. Maiden Voyage, which specialises in inclusive travel and safety, runs the Inclusive Guest Excellence training course for those working in the hotel sector. The course addresses and provides solutions for the challenges faced by different groups of travellers, such as women, men, LGBTQ+, disabled and neurodiverse persons and those from different racial and cultural backgrounds.

Travelodge has appointed Demi Turner as its new director of sustainability, as part of the group’s target of becoming a net-zero business by 2050. Turner has previously held roles including global head of sustainability and social impact at Dentsu, and head of responsible and sustainable sourcing at Whitbread – owner of rival budget hotel brand Premier Inn.

Technology start-up BeCause, which helps hotels manage their sustainability data, has partnered with hubli, the platform for corporate meetings, events and group hotel bookings. This partnership means hubli will add to the 25,000 eco-labelled hotels on its platform, with the aim to offer clients better visibility on a hotel’s environmental footprint, and comply with ESG policies.

SH Hotels & Resorts is embarking on a significant worldwide expansion of its portfolio, which includes the nature-inspired 1 Hotels brand. 1 Hotels launched in 2015 with the opening of 1 Hotels & Homes South Beach, offering “sanctuaries that nurture the planet while seamlessly blending the natural world with a luxurious indoor environment.”

Climate literacy: Carbon positive, climate positive, net zero, low carbon, carbon neutral, carbon negative… Do some of these mean the same or are they all very different? Are some of them already replaced by other more accepted phrases as time and knowledge merges? These phrases and how we use them will become more and more important to make sure hotels and businesses are communicating the right message to the world.
