This week SilverDoor launched its carbon calculator, which shows carbon emissions per guest per night for each apartment. Bob W has also just called on the sector to go "naked" with its numbers – we detail how these numbers are calculated. The accommodation sector will be under more pressure to provide this type of data as new regulations come in on January 1.

Short stay apartment operator Bob W has launched a campaign calling for the hospitality industry to reveal the ‘naked numbers’ behind their carbon footprint. Bob W says it hopes to encourage collaboration and share best practice within the industry to be clear on reporting and allow travellers to make informed choices.

The Lamington Group, which owns the sustainable room2 aparthotels, has achieved B Corp status. The group, which has room2 properties in Chiswick, Hammersmith, Southampton and most recently Belfast, has committed to only build and operate whole life net zero standards since it launched its roadmap in 2021.

SilverDoor, the global provider of serviced accommodation for business travellers, has today announced the launch of a new sustainability tool – a carbon calculator. The tool will enable SilverDoor’s clients to “adopt a more forensic approach” when reviewing and understanding the environmental impact of the accommodation they choose.

As a media parter with AltoVita, Sustainable Hotel News’ editor Felicity Cousins will also be hosting a panel, which will look at how to navigate the new sustainability regulations. The University of South Carolina has partnered with the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance in an effort to advance “the vision” for net positive hospitality. Through this collaboration, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management at the university will co-create research projects with the Alliance.

LifeGate’s Stay for the Planet sustainability hotel management system has achieved the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)-Recognised Standard. This means the company’s Stay for the Planet Regulations and Technical Notes v2.0 have been fully recognised as equivalent to the GSTC Industry Criteria.

The Ascott Limited (Ascott), has announced a ‘sustainability passport’ for guests staying at its Somerset properties worldwide. The Somerset Sustainability Passport Programme aims to engage guests in activities, wellness programmes and community initiatives in support of Ascott’s sustainability goals.

Dalata Hotel Group, one of Ireland’s largest hotel operators, has opened its first Maldron Hotel in London, achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating as well as meeting EPC A status – the most energy efficient rating a building can achieve. The group has plans to open Maldron Hotels in London’s Shoreditch and Brighton and Liverpool, as well as adding a second Maldron Hotel in Manchester. As part of the new build process the group has issued a set of ‘Employer Requirements’ to the developer/builder where a standard of BREAM ‘very good’ has to be achieved.

Radisson Hotel Group has opened the Radisson Blu Hotel at Porsche Design Tower Stuttgart, which is looking to achieve a Gold-level certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The DGNB system is in line with the criteria of the EU taxonomy (which we talked about earlier this month) so that proof of compliance can be provided in parallel with certification.

Sustainable Hotel News caught up with Uga vice president, Marcelline Paul to talk about the GSTC, if luxury can be sustainable, the work it does with Sri Lankan women, and how the country is developing its responsible tourism offering. Sri Lankan-owned Uga has six resorts which practice long-term sustainability strategies to address environmental, social, cultural, economic, quality and human rights issues in the country, with a particular focus on communities and the environment. Its Uga Ulagalla resort has one of the largest solar panel farms of any hotel in Sri Lanka and keeps the need to draw power from the grid to a minimum.
