EUROPE: Dalata Hotel Group, one of Ireland’s largest hotel operators, has opened its first Maldron Hotel in London, achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The four star Maldron Hotel Finsbury Park (pictured) is the group’s 53rd hotel in Europe and the first of five Maldron Hotels set to open across the UK in the next 12 months.

The hotel has been accredited with a BREEAM Excellent rating, as well as meeting EPC A status – the most energy efficient rating a building can achieve.

Dalata Hotel Group has two hotel brands, which include Maldron Hotels and Clayton Hotels and has its Living Green environmental promise on its website.

The Living Green initiatives include:

An environmental steering team of ten people to keep up the momentum on its sustainable pathway, which is focused on energy use, wasted and water. Reports are circulated to all hotels on a monthly basis guiding them on how they can better reduce their consumption of electricity, gas and water.

The group has also partnered with Green Tourism, which conducted energy and sustainability audits at all Maldron Hotels, with each hotel gaining a Green Tourism accreditation as part of this process.

Some initiatives at the hotels include food waste management – all food waste is processed through anaerobic digestion to produce energy that is delivered back to the national grid. In 2019 the group sent 1,236 tonnes of food to a processing plant, which created 494.5 Mwh of energy and 247.2 tonnes of fertiliser.

Most of the group’s hotels have installed tap and shower aerators which control the flow of water without affecting pressure. This creates an average saving of five litres of running water per minute from taps and showers. The group is looking at installing aerators on all taps and showers across all its hotels.

More than 35,000 bulbs have been changed to LED to date and the group is “working towards replacing all light bulbs across our hotels to LED.”

It is also in the process of reviewing the effectiveness of its hotel BMS (Building Management Systems) which it will upgrade and replace as appropriate.

Dalata Hotel Group has plans to open Maldron Hotels in London’s Shoreditch, Brighton and Liverpool as well as adding a second Maldron Hotel in Manchester. As part of the new build process the group has issued a set of ‘Employer Requirements’ to the developer/builder where a standard of BREAM ‘very good’ has to be achieved.
