GBTA teams up with Sustainable Hospitality Alliance

WORLDWIDE: The Global Business Travel Association Foundation (GBTA) has teamed up with The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance to help the global business travel industry create a positive impact and a better future for people and the planet.

WORLDWIDE: The Global Business Travel Association Foundation (GBTA) has teamed up with The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance to help the global business travel industry create a positive impact and a better future for people and the planet.

The business travel sector represented $1.4 trillion in pre-pandemic (2019) global travel spending annually and sustainability has become an increasingly important factor for business travel buyers and suppliers. 

Through the partnership, both organisations will be collaborating to build a more sustainable future for business travel by working across both the business travel community and the hospitality providers and suppliers which accommodate them. 

GBTA research shows that the business travel sector worldwide views addressing climate change as the number one priority area for action (88 per cent), and are putting tangible steps in place. 

Three-quarters (76 per cent) of travel buyers report they have already incorporated or are planning to incorporate sustainability objectives in their company’s travel policies.

One of the challenges reported by business travel buyers is the lack of transparent sustainability data, with 63 per cent of the industry wanting improved access to data. 

As such, a more robust approach to carbon measurement for the accommodation sector through the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) – a carbon calculation methodology developed by the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance will be aligned. We reported the updated HCMI story here.

Already in use across the hotel industry, the HCMI tool is recognised by GBTA as a go-to standard measurement for hotels at any stage in their sustainability journey and is included in GBTA’s revamped Sustainability Toolkit – a guide for corporate travel managers to track and improve the environmental performance of their travel programs.

Whitbread joins the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance

UK: Whitbread, which owns Premier Inn as well as a range of pub and restaurant brands, has joined the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance.

Through its sustainability programme ‘Force for Good’, Whitbread is aiming to have a positive impact on its guests and the environment. 

To deliver this vision, the company has set long-term strategic targets, including reaching net zero by 2040, eliminating unnecessary single-use plastic by 2025 and cutting food waste by 50 per cent by 2030. 

Whitbread owns and operates the majority of its properties with over 800 hotels and 400 restaurants in the UK and a growing footprint in Germany.

By becoming part of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, Whitbread is joining a global network which represents almost 40 per cent of the industry by rooms and brings the hospitality industry together with strategic and supply chain partners to work collectively on issues affecting the planet and its people.

room2 unveils anti Black Friday video

UK: room2, the world’s first fully whole life net zero hometel, has released a video calling for people to look after our home, the Earth.

The campaign aims to encourage the public to reflect on the impact that Black Friday has on the environment. 

Through an emotive video, which you can see on Youtube here, room2 asks the world to protect its home, spend wisely, and buy consciously because it’s the only home we’ve got. 

The video was directed by award-winning director, Alfie Dale, and features a little girl talking to her unborn sibling about the world we live in and how we are risking destroying it for future generations.  

room2’s co-founder, Robert Godwin said: “We love Alfie’s approach and the fact that he holds a real understanding of our brand and the values we are looking to promote. The responsibility falls on all of us to build a more sustainable future and collaborating with Alfie has helped us convey this important message in a way that makes the viewer think, feel and we hope act, at this key time of consumption.”

Last year, British Black Friday online sales alone emitted over 386,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, the equivalent of 215,778 return flights between London and Sydney, and the same weight as 3,679 blue whales. To try and reduce this, room2 hometels are asking the public to think about the impact these purchases have before buying.

Recognising the importance in educating the younger generation on these topics, room2 will be supporting ClimateEd, a charity which offers free education to children on climate change and carbon literacy, empowering them to take action and understand the effects of our actions. 

As part of this partnership, and to help limit the effects of Black Friday purchases this year, room2 will be donating 50 per cent  of all bookings made with the code GREENFRIDAY on November 25th, to the charity.

The GrINN Awards, which are run by Quartz Hotels, invited the public to vote for their favourite out of 50 categories with the final say by the expert judging panel.

Alexander Zawadzki, organiser of the GrINN Awards said: “We are very happy with the outcome of the awards, as our main goal is to promote sustainability and we have achieved it in many countries of Europe. The response and help from the audience and accommodation providers have been astonishing.

Zeal Hotels submits plans for sustainable Devon hotel

UK: Zeal Hotels has submitted plans for a sustainable hotel in East Devon.

The group hopes to gain permission and start work onsite in Exeter Science Park, next year with an expected opening for mid 2024. 

Tim Wheeldon, managing director, Zeal Hotels said: “The 13-year dream is quickly becoming a reality. We are nearing the end of the planning journey for our first hotel and anticipate being able to begin the build early next year. East Devon District Council have been incredibly helpful, working with us to bring this project to life.” 

The 140-room hotel is aiming for a minimum BREEAM rating of Excellent, with a target of Outstanding. It will feature meeting rooms, a restaurant, bar, gym, gardens, and EV charging points.

Wheeldon added: “Demand for truly sustainable hotels has never been more pressing. COP 27 will continue to highlight the issues facing us and will serve to remind us that action and global consensus is what’s needed & now.Approximately 80 per cent of the hotel stock we will have in 2050 has already been built and the hospitality industry has to reduce its carbon emissions by 66 per cent on 2019 levels by 2030.”

The property will be the first of a number of sustainable hotels Zeal Hotels plans to open across the UK.

Established in 2012, Zeal Hotels has the specific aim of acquiring strategic hotel sites, developing the hotels and maintaining ownership of the assets. Motivated to reduce a hotel’s carbon emissions through the construction process, as well as operations, Zeal Hotels has launched a new brand, targeting net zero carbon, with the first UK site in the process of acquisition and is seeking further development opportunities.
