easyHotel is investing £4.5 million into sustainability initiatives across its UK hotels. I sat down with Karim Malak CEO easyHotel for an insightful Q&A.

💬 Q&A: Karim Malak CEO easyHotel

"It used to be all about carbon offsetting but there has been a huge backlash on that and that’s the main change I’ve been seeing in the past two to three years... I think it’s all about buildings and 80 per cent of the whole issue is in construction."

🚗 Village Hotels to install EV chargers across UK portfolio

IONITY will install and operate 380 charging points at all 33 Village Hotels across the UK. This is the largest partnership for IONITY in the United Kingdom.

☀️ Solar panels and EV chargers for Staffordshire hotel

The renewable energy investment means the hotel will generate and use more renewable energy, enough to power a large proportion of the day-to-day operations and a forecasted 20-tonne decrease in carbon emissions.

🍎 IHG opens fourth voco hotel in New York

The brand is known for its sustainability efforts and recently teamed up with Zeal in the UK to launch the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, IHG’s first lifecycle net zero carbon offering.

🚘Hilton to install Tesla charging stations at 2,000 hotels

Hilton has announced it will be installing 20,000 Tesla charging points at more than 2,000 hotels.

📝Accor hotels in Queensland gain GSTC-recognised standard

Accor has announced four of its hotels in Queensland have been Sustainable Tourism Certified by Ecotourism Australia, a standard recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

🌤️ Call for ‘climate action hub’ to help sector reach Net Zero

HOTREC, which represents the hospitality sector in Europe, has released a report about sustainability calling for an online climate action hub.

🔍 FOCUS ON: Embodied Carbon

Embodied carbon is the total CO2 emitted when producing materials, which means when you build a new hotel or make extensive refurbishments or extensions you have to take into account the carbon footprint of that work.

The hospitality sector’s Energy and Environment Alliance (EEA) and King’s Business School are launching an executive education programme to help hospitality businesses with their ESG practices. There is still time to enrol for the online course, which starts next Friday September 22nd. The course has been developed with input from the industry’s leaders to help them to embed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) measures in their businesses.
