This week it was great to see another sustainability role being created and filled with the appointment of travel management company ATPI's first sustainability officer Louisa Toure - learn more about Louisa and her new role at the bottom of the newsletter.

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has been busy: partnering with GRESB to help decarbonise the hospitality sector through the use of ESG data, gaining all-inclusive hotels and resorts Club Med as a partner, and I'm also excited to see the new partnership with HotelSchool The Hague – to start educating in local areas where hotels operate. The sooner we start embedding sustainability into the industry the better. For future hoteliers sustainability will be second nature.

Room2 Southampton, Chiswick and Hammersmith have been verified as carbon neutral, in accordance with the PAS 2060 standard, for the year of 2022. Developed by the British Standards Institution in 2010, PAS 2060 takes companies through the process to carbon neutrality in four stages: measurement, reduction, offsetting and documentation.

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has partnered with GRESB to use ESG data and training to decarbonise the hospitality sector. Founded in 2009, GRESB, which has B Corp status, is the global ESG benchmark for real estate assets. GRESB’s ESG assessments are guided by material issues identified by investors and the wider industry.

Whitbread PLC, owner of Premier Inn, has purchased a consented hotel development site in Manchester in the city’s Northern Quarter.The construction specification is expected to achieve BREEAM Very Good as a minimum standard.

S&P Global has published its latest Sustainability Yearbook, with several well known brands included in the hotels and resorts section. The yearbook aims to distinguish those companies within their industries which have demonstrated strengths in corporate sustainability.

Accor has entered into a strategic partnership with Qualmark to work towards certifying Accor hotels, resorts and apartments across New Zealand as Gold Standard Sustainable Tourism Businesses.

All-inclusive holiday resort company, Club Med, has partnered with the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (the Alliance). Since 2018 around 70 per cent of new or majorly renovated Club Med resorts have been built to globally recognised BREEAM standards.

The ‘Green Tourism Criteria for Hotels & Other Accommodation’ Version 10 has gained GSTC-Recognised Standard status, meaning it has been fully recognised as equivalent to the GSTC Industry Criteria.

Sustainability accreditation firm Greengage has awarded Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre Gold status within its ECOsmart programme. Owned by the University of Birmingham, the property is targeting net zero carbon status by 2035, with the University of Birmingham committing to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045.

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and Hotelschool The Hague have teamed up to create a knowledge and training partnership. The collaboration will involve consultations on activities related to the Alliance’s sustainable People and Planet programmes and will drive the development of training modules in areas local to where hotels operate.

ONYX Hospitality Group has teamed up with UNESCO for cultural sustainability initiatives, as well as targeting its carbon neutrality goals. The group has committed to working with UNESCO and will focus on safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage and community-based tourism across Asia- Pacific.

Global travel management and events company ATPI Group has appointed Louisa Toure as its first sustainability officer. In her new role, Toure will spearhead ATPI Group’s internal sustainability initiatives and develop ESG strategies across the global business. Toure joined ATPI in 2014 as a senior account manager supporting clients in the energy and marine sectors, whilst studying at university for a Bachelor’s degree in Business Sustainability, and later a post graduate in Energy and Carbon Studies. She has worked in the travel industry for nearly 20 years.
