ICELAND: Blue Lagoon Iceland and its collection of hotels, resorts, spas and other subsidiaries has announced it has been certified B Corp.
Its portfolio includes The Retreat at Blue Lagoon and the newly opened Highland Base – Kerlingarfjoll in Iceland’s central highlands, which we wrote about in July.
With the certification, Blue Lagoon Iceland is now part of a community of 7,334 businesses globally – including 85 B Corps in the Nordics.
It joins a growing group of companies reinventing business by creating a more inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system for all. Check out our feature on B Corp and the hotel sector – understanding the process.
Blue Lagoon Iceland has been certified by B Lab, the not-for-profit behind the B Corp Movement, as having met rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability that represent its commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.
Founder and CEO of Blue Lagoon Iceland, Grímur Sæmundsen, said: “Wellbeing for people and planet are the key tenets of Blue Lagoon Iceland and have guided the way we have conducted business for decades. It is what sparked our foundation and what we have been striving to achieve from the very beginning.”
Founder and executive director of the B Corp Nordics, Nille Skalts, said: “I am thrilled to welcome Blue Lagoon Iceland to the Nordic B Corp Movement. Our vision to create an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system for all people and the planet will be greatly enriched and inspired by the culture of business that Blue Lagoon Iceland brings to the B Corp Movement.”
Since it began in 1992, Blue Lagoon Iceland has placed a strong focus on sustainability, corporate social responsibility, as well as research and development. The company’s foundation is based on the unique geothermal Blue Lagoon Water, which has been an infinite source of development from services to products, experiences to scientific research.
In addition to being a globally recognized hospitality company, Blue Lagoon Iceland has also developed skincare lines based on the foundations of science and sustainability. All Blue Lagoon Skincare products are based on the healing properties of the geothermal Blue Lagoon Water and its primary bioactive elements – silica, microalgae, and minerals.
Sæmundsen added: “With our B Corp certification, we now have an official standard to measure our efforts against and the tools to further evolve our social and environmental responsibilities. We will continually strive to be a force for good – not just within Iceland, but globally.”
