US: Luxury hotel, 1 Hotel South Beach, has been awarded a 2022 Green Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
The 435-room hotel, which is LEED Silver Certified and carbon neutral, offers guests the opportunity to be sustainable during their stay through experiences such as dining in the farm to table restaurants, or donating clothes to be recycled. There are also workshops for younger guests to learn about nature, and the opportunity to take the hotel’s electric car for a drive around Miami.
Architects Kobi Karp Architecture & Interior Design Inc have used natural recycled materials where possible, such as wood and stone, and there is a living wall as well. The building uses a water filtration system to deter guests from having bottled water, as well as having an energy efficient heating and cooling building system.
1 Hotels has offset 19,171 tons of CO2 since it started recording the data. To put that into perspective, one ton of CO2 is the equivalent of driving 23,000 miles or once around the world.
Three of the group’s hotels are LEED Silver certified including the Miami Beach property while 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge gained a LEED Gold certification. Three of the group’s hotels are in the process of being certified for LEED.
