This week I'm pleased to share a great Q&A I had with Michael Mason-Shaw general manager of Hyatt Place London City East. We talked in depth about how to integrate best practice from a building level up, how finding the right person to take on the sustainability role is key, and how to keep staff engaged in the process. The 280-room Hyatt Place London City East was developed from a brownfield site and opened in 2021 with BREEAM Excellent certification. General manager Michael Mason-Shaw has been tracking his personal carbon footprint for more than five years and believes change comes from the individual, as well as at individual property level.

Aligned with COP 28, the initiative acknowledges the impact of the hotel group on local and global environments and establishes a science-based target to achieve a 27 per cent reduction in scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 with a 2017 base line.

Green Tourism is a certification programme, which recognises and promotes sustainable practices in the tourism industry. The accreditation criteria are based on internationally recognised sustainability standards and guidelines, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The partnership will mean BWH Hotels’ properties can implement a standardised sustainability programme across the United States and Canada. Rebecca Bartlett Jones, director of Green Key Global explained that the programme “is designed to help hotels improve their environmental performance and reduce their carbon footprint.”

Nina Boys, vice president of sustainability, Beyond Green Travel said: “Beyond Green members demonstrate what is possible when world-class hospitality and sustainable solutions converge, and their collective positive impact in supporting local Nature, Culture and Community represents the transformation of travel.”

The partnership with Winnow and ne’ma, the UAE national food loss and waste initiative, has recorded a 62 per cent reduction in pre- and post-consumer food waste across breakfast operations in a four month period.

According to Hilton’s global survey, the top reason for travel next year will be to take time out to sleep. The report also found that business travellers were concerned about the sustainability aspect of their trips, with 74 per cent of them saying they wanted to reduce their environmental impact.

Belmond the luxury travel brand has appointed Carmel McQuaid as head of environmental and social impact, to start on January 2, 2024. McQuaid will be responsible for delivering on Belmond’s environmental and social goals, as well as shaping the brand’s global sustainability strategy.

The Ascott Limited’s Citadines Islington, which offers 108 apartments, will save 42 per cent on energy, 28 per cent on water and 98 per cent on ‘less embodied energy in materials’ according to the EDGE report after retrofits were made.
