Culture – that's what needs to change if we are to achieve sustainability targets in the business travel sector. This was according to the room of around 120 buyers, travel managers, suppliers and business travel experts at the ITM Road to Net Zero event which was held this week at ME London, The Strand.

The event covered the importance of sustainability data and reporting (report your sustainability data as rigorously as you would your financial data) and there was a keen look at culture – the importance of gaining buy-in from leadership as well as changing culture in small ways. Léa Jacquot-Benson assistant sustainability manager Considerate Group talks to Sustainable Hotel News about strategy, implementation and how important transparency and data is when hotels talk about sustainability. We also look at having the resources to take on sustainability roles, green hushing, and how sometimes the biggest challenge to hotels are the promises that have already been made.

The Institute of Travel Management’s Road to Net Zero event, held this week, found that data and a change of culture was key to the travel industry achieving its sustainability goals. The event, which was attended by 120 travel buyers, industry experts and suppliers took place at ME London on The Strand. One of the key takeaways from the day was that culture within the industry would have to change to achieve sustainability targets for travel programmes and while this change could come in small steps, ultimately it’s the leaders who set expectations for how a business is operated.

HRS has launched a sustainable education programme known as the Green Stay Knowledge Hub for the hotel sector. The corporate accommodation and technology platform has launched the hub to offer those in the hotel sector a range of courses, webinars and downloadable guides focused on sustainable operations and best practice.

Budget brand easyHotel has announced plans to roll out initiatives to reduce carbon emissions at selected European properties. The group will invest €1.5 million in ten of its owned hotels in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain, with further locations expected to be announced at a later date. The initiatives will vary by property, but will include the installation of heat pumps and motion sensor LED lights. Easyhotel said it was also “taking steps to raise awareness about energy use to both staff and guests across all locations to help reduce unnecessary energy usage”.

Dr. Megan Morikawa has been elected as the new chair of the Travel Foundation on the Board of Trustees, replacing Helen Marano, who first assumed the role in December 2020. The Travel Foundation has declared an ambition to scale its global impact alongside its call for accelerated climate action and increased equity in the travel and tourism sector. Morikawa assumes the leadership position as the organisation begins implementation of its recently developed Strategy 2030.

Aparthotel operator Adagio has outlined plans to obtain Green Key accreditation for 40 European sites in 2024.The brand’s CSR strategy is anchored by the mission of “Acting for the transition of cities”, focusing on reducing its environmental footprint, as well as “strengthening social bonds and acting collectively”. To this end Adagio is targeting external sustainable certification through Green Key for 40 of its aparthotels this year – 30 sites in France and ten elsewhere in Europe.

Hyatt Place London City East has completed its independent Omnevue assessment on ESG, and has revealed what it wants to achieve this year. Omnevue, an ESG reporting platform, connects to a company’s financial, HR, and other data sources before collecting, analysing and generating reports aligned with international accounting standards.
