EUROPE: Aparthotel brand Adagio has been awarded 37 Green Key labels as part of an initiative to gain the certification for all directly managed aparthotels in the portfolio by 2028.

The aparthotel giant, which began in France in 2007 as a joint venture between Accor and Pierre & Vacances Centre Parcs, has 129 sites and 14,733 apartments across 16 countries.

Adagio aims to gain the Green Key label for all directly managed sites by 2028, regardless of country, while also encouraging franchised sites to join the initiative, offering support throughout the process.

Last year the aparthotel brand aimed for 40 properties to achieve Green Key and this week it announced 37 Adagio-managed establishments and 10 franchised or master-franchised sites have received the label.

There are 20 new applications in the pipeline with a goal for those properties to achieve the label by 2026.

Adagio aims to drive sustainability initiatives across its portfolio to meet all the mandatory criteria for Green Key certification, which is a respected benchmark for sustainable tourism and present in 68 countries across five continents.

The criteria for the Green Key label focus on sustainable resource management, waste management, promotion of sustainable consumption, energy efficiency and emission reduction, employee training and stakeholder awareness and local engagement and solidarity.

The label is awarded after a property provides evidence of compliance with the criteria and an on-site audit is conducted by independent experts.

Fanny Justine, general manager Adagio Access Marseille Saint Charles said of the process: “I must admit that at first, I had my doubts. I never considered myself an environment activist … Preparing the application was a revelation. It allowed me to grasp the environmental challenges around us, but also to identify areas where we can improve. The label provided us with a framework and clear objectives.”

She added: “This work was not just an administrative challenge; it has transformed how we perceive and live our professional daily lives. Being sustainable isn’t about being perfect – it’s about moving forward, every day, with greater awareness.”

Virginie Barboux, senior vice president client and marketing Adagio said: “At Adagio, we believe in sustainable tourism and are committed to offering our guests, who are increasingly mindful of these issues, the opportunity to travel responsibly. The awarding of the Green Key label to our aparthotels represents the fulfilment of this commitment.”
