I've just returned from a spontaneous pub lunch with a friend, and as we were rushing to our respective meetings, we were told the owner is looking to take the next steps to becoming more sustainable. More on that another time – but when I find out these little nuggets of information it makes me realise how far we have come, and how more and more, it seems, sustainability is no longer just a buzzword – but part of our lives. Even our lunchtimes.
Good news with the appointment of Barnaby Kean as general manager of the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, which is due to open its doors in January 2025. The hotel will be operated by Valor Hospitality and will join IHG’s network as the group’s first net zero carbon hotel.
Novotel has partnered with WWF to help protect and restore the world's oceans. Karelle Lamouche, CCO premium, midscale & economy division, Accor, said: “Together with our partners, teams and guests, Novotel will lead the charge toward a sustainable future for our oceans, pioneering a new era of environmental stewardship in our hotels and driving industry change.”
And we have a sustainable hotel review of the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm, the striking building pictured above. What makes this so special is the sheer size of the property as it is attached to the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, which hosts regular events for up to 3,000 people and is one of the most sustainable events centres in the world. All events which take place here are 100 per cent carbon neutral. You can read the full review in our feature section or click on the link on the story at the bottom of the newsletter.
Until next time,

Hilton has seen a 20 per cent reduction in post-consumer food waste during its Green Ramadan initiative.
This year the programme was across 32 hotels in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Turkey and Malaysia and served 239,000 guests during iftars and suhoors.
Staff at participating hotels had sustainability training, and focused on local sourcing, waste management, and diversion by donation and composting where possible.
The hotels also used methods such as guest messaging, smaller portions, live cooking stations, reduced food displays and switching to à la carte menus rather than buffets.

Accor’s founding brand, Novotel, is partnering with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to champion the protection and restoration of the oceans.

The Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC), which represents self-catering operators in Scotland, has partnered with Sustonica to showcase short-term rentals implementing sustainable practices.
The ASSC has more than 1,700 members and supports the operation of tens of thousands of self-catering properties across Scotland.
Under the Sustonica badge participating properties are required to achieve a minimum of 20 per cent of the criteria and improve on their score each year.
This is in accordance with the ISO methodology PDCA, a continuous cycle of “planning, doing, checking and acting”, which means companies have to increase their scores every year.
