Congratulations to Whatley Manor for securing its EarthCheck Silver status for the third consecutive year. This effort means if the hotel achieves Silver status again next year it can aim for EarthCheck Gold in 2026.
There may be a big change in our lives from tomorrow. Let's hope whoever is given the privilege of power treats sustainability and the climate crisis with the respect it needs, and deserves.
Until next time,

In December 2021 London saw the opening of the net zero “hometel” by the Lamington Group with room2 Chiswick. The idea from brothers and owners, Robert and Stuart Godwin, was to create a home from home, having spent years on the road travelling to sports events as British Olympic Development Sailing team members, they never quite felt any of the properties they stayed in hit the mark. And so the “hometel” was born – an aparthotel concept which offers guests kitchenettes in their apartments, as well as the option to take breakfast in the cafe, work and go to the on-site gym. There is even a laundry room for those staying longer than a few days. At the time there was little around in London on the sustainability front and room2 aimed to fight the climate crisis without compromising on style and comfort. The property has a Green Tourism Gold certification and is B Corp certified.

Whatley Manor has secured its EarthCheck Silver status for the third consecutive year following a successful reduction of Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
Once a property has achieved four consecutive Silvers they can go for Gold status, which means if Whatley Manor achieves Silver status again next year it can aim for EarthCheck Gold in 2026.
Sue Williams, sustainability advisor to the hotel said: “Receiving the news that Whatley has successfully managed to reduce their gas emissions five years ahead of schedule is an environmental milestone we are truly proud of; we need to keep a strong focus to achieve ongoing annual Carbon reductions in order to be on track to achieve EarthCheck gold in 2026.

AI-driven food waste solution, Winnow, has become a member of The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (the Alliance).
Winnow has been widely adopted by brands such as Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Accor, Compass Group, ISS, and Iberostar.
Typically a commercial kitchen wastes 5-15 per cent of the food it buys.
Winnow’s technology uses AI to identify wasted food items in real-time. Its analytics tools then help teams pinpoint waste areas, giving them insights to make operational improvements and cut waste in half.
A kitchen using Winnow would therefore expect to cut food purchasing costs by 2-8 per cent. Partners of Winnow are saving US$70 million in food costs each year and preventing 50 million meals from entering landfill.

This week Beyond Green welcomed five of its member hotels to join a canal clean up, organised by the Lower Regents Coalition in Hackney Wick, London.
The idea was to bring together some of Beyond Green’s sustainable hotels in a positive activity – working together to make a difference. We were told any rubbish we brought out of the water was stopping it from breaking down into micro plastics and polluting the oceans.
